I had noticed the phenomenon some 30 years ago.  Both, excelling and wining.  As you say, the first one much nicer, specially within a teamwork.  While the wining was plainly flat and egocentric.  Though such specimens would herd fans blinded by their "styles" or "poses", being this whole spectacle, the roots for the construction of this present society where values are worth less and style is worth more.  Becoming a celebrity is a more natural goal in these days, than being someone helpful.

Thanks!
